Scale Force – For the beauty seekers

Scale Force
Scale Force

Few waterfalls in the Lake District can match the sheer drama and beauty of Scale Force. The breath-taking cascade plunges an impressive 50 metres, making it the tallest waterfall in the region.

Hidden in a narrow gorge near Crummock Water, this striking fall is surrounded by rugged cliffs and ancient woodland, creating a scene that feels wild and untouched. Its height and power make Scale Force a true spectacle, especially after rainfall when the water thunders down in full force.

For lovers of local folklore and legends, Scale Force is said to have an eerie, mystical presence. Some old tales suggest that spirits dwell in its secluded gorge and that a ghostly figure haunts the area, and locals once believed the sound of the water carried voices of the fells.

Reaching Scale Force offers a scenic walk that immerses you in the best of the Lake District’s landscapes. The route winds through peaceful paths and open fells, providing glimpses of Crummock Water and the surrounding mountains before leading you into the secluded ravine where the waterfall awaits. While the terrain is more challenging than some of the region’s easier walks, the reward is worth every step.

Top tip

Bring a spare set of clothes, or at the very least, socks. Waterfalls are wet, so there’s a high chance you might get wet too, and there’s nothing worse than soggy feet!

Lodore Falls – For the hikers

Lodore Falls
Lodore Falls

Nestled in the heart of Borrowdale, Lodore Falls is one of the Lake District’s most inviting destinations for hikers who love combining scenic trails with the beauty of a waterfall.

The falls cascade dramatically down a series of rocky steps, framed by lush woodland and the tranquil waters of Derwentwater nearby. Beyond the waterfall itself, Lodore Falls opens up a network of walking opportunities that showcase the best of the Lake District’s outdoors.

From short loops through serene forests to longer treks that climb into surrounding fells, such as Catbells, or follow the edge of Derwentwater, every route rewards you with sweeping views and a sense of immersion in nature. The combination of cascading water, verdant landscapes, and versatile trails makes this spot a perfect base for anyone who wants to explore on foot.

Top tip

Wear sturdy footwear when exploring waterfalls. Not only can the ground around them be slippery and rocky, but in some cases the walks to them can be uneven.

Ritson’s Force – For the wild swimmers

For those seeking the a wild swimming experience in the Lake District, Ritson’s Force is the ideal location.

Tucked away near the village of Wasdale Head, this beautiful cascade flows into a deep plunge pool with striking turquoise waters that look almost tropical against the rugged backdrop of the fells. The pool at the base of the waterfall is spacious, making it an inviting spot for a refreshing dip after a walk through the valley.

Getting to Ritson’s Force involves a scenic walk through Wasdale that immerses you in the heart of the Lake District’s wild beauty. The route is relatively gentle, following riverside paths and open meadows, so you can enjoy the outdoors without a strenuous climb.

Once you reach the falls, the setting feels wonderfully secluded, perfect for those who want to escape the crowds and connect with nature. For those who love the idea of cooling off in crystal-clear waters after a hike, Ritson’s Force offers an unforgettable experience.

Top tip

If you plan to take a dip in a waterfall’s plunge pool, it’s recommended to do so in the drier months. While waterfalls look beautiful after heavy rain, the water in full force can be dangerous.

Rydal Falls & the Grot – For the romantics

Rydal Waterfall and the Grot
Rydal Waterfall and the Grot

Set in one of the most enchanting corners of the Lake District, Rydal Falls and the Grot feel like something straight out of a fairy-tale.

Nestled in a serene woodland near Rydal Hall, the falls tumble gracefully into a shaded glen, surrounded by mossy rocks and leafy canopies that create a magical, romantic atmosphere. What makes this spot truly unique is the Grot, or Grotto, a historic stone viewing hut built in the 18th century, designed specifically to frame the waterfall like a living painting. Standing inside, you’ll see the falls perfectly positioned through the window, a view that has inspired poets and artists for centuries.

Wordsworth himself, who lived nearby, enjoyed visits to the waterfall. It’s mentioned in his poem ‘An Evening Walk’, written in 1793:

And its own twilight softens the whole scene,
Save where aloft the subtle sunbeams shine
On withered briars that o’er the crags recline;
Save where, with sparkling foam, a small cascade
Illumines, from within, the leafy shade;

The walk to Rydal Falls is gentle and picturesque, following woodland paths that invite you to slow down and savour the beauty of nature. It’s an easy route, ideal for couples looking for a quiet escape or anyone who wants to experience the Lake District’s softer, more romantic side. With its combination of natural charm and historic character, Rydal Falls and the Grot offer a setting that feels timeless.
