Here at OS, we firmly believe an active outdoor lifestyle helps you live longer, stay younger and enjoy life more. The GetOutside app allows you to make the most of your time outside and gives you the confidence to go outdoors – knowing where to go and what to do. Planning a great day out has never been easier!
Having insider knowledge is great, so why not tell others about your favourite places and events? Add them straight to the app so others can enjoy them too. You can also add photos to help people learn more about a place.
Everyone needs an account to be able to save your favourite activities – helping you plan your next day out. By having an account, you’ll also be able to manage the photos, places and events you’ve added.

Once you’ve set your location, the home screen will show you the nearest routes, places, events and things to do. If you’re searching for something specific, places for example, scroll down to places and select ‘see all’ and your search results will expand and only show you places.
With the help of our partners, we’re continually adding new places and events. If there’s not much in your area or there’s something else you’d like to see, we’d love to hear from you (email us at email@example.com). You can add your own places and events directly to the app so, if you feel something is missing, please add it and help others get outside too.
Yes, we know how important some facilities are for a great day out!
These artist sketches are just placeholders, and this means no one has added a photo yet. Be the first to upload a photo of a place and when you do, you’ll see the sketch disappear and your photo take centre stage. Help us, help others to get outside!
GetOutside will give you a preview of some of the best leisurely walking and cycling routes in the area and provide directions to these routes. These routes are here to inspire you but if you wish to fully navigate a route, you will need our OS Maps digital app. OS Maps will help you discover thousands of routes. To unlock our premium mapping and some features, you will need a subscription
The routes are a selection of our leisurely circular routes, provided by OS Maps. They are a combination of OS-written, partner provided and OS Maps user-generated routes.
No, you’ll need to head over to OS Maps for this.
Yes, explore on two wheels or two feet!
GetOutside offers a small selection of leisurely routes to inspire you. If you want to fully navigate a route, you’ll have to head over to our sister app OS Maps.
The routes in GetOutside are there to inspire you and give you direction to the start. You’ll be able to see the route on a basic map, but if you’d like to navigate the route, see full mapping information, or follow the route offline, you’ll need to download OS Maps. Many features in OS Maps, including detailed mapping and navigation require a premium subscription (starting from £2.99).
If you come across a missing outdoor place that you think others would enjoy you can add it to the app yourself. Just click on ‘add place’ (in orange) under places in the home screen. You’ll then be asked to fill in a few details and add a photo of that place.
If you know of a great outdoor event or maybe you’re organising one yourself, you can add it to the app to let others know about it too. To do this, click on ‘Add event’ under events in the home screen. You can choose whether you want your event to be public or private.
The more photos shared the better the app will become! Add a photo of a place or event by clicking on the place or event and swiping left on the image to see the ‘add photo’ screen. Click this to take a photo or add one from your library. If a place or event doesn’t have a photo (only a placeholder sketch) you can be the first to add a photo by clicking ‘add first photo’ in the bottom right corner of the sketch.
You can add reviews of places and routes. To do so, click on the place or route and scroll down to the ‘review’ section. Here, you can rate the place or route by clicking on the stars (5 being the best), you will then be given the opportunity to write a review, add a photo and select from several tags to best describe that place or route.
If you have any feedback about the app – the good, the bad or some awesome ideas for improvement – we’d love to hear from you! Please let us know by using the feedback button in ‘Settings’ or emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
