Meet Shilpa Rasiah, a big fan of rivers, canals and lakes – whether paddleboarding, walking or cycling
Tell us a bit about yourself and how you like to get outside?
I grew up in Africa and lived outdoors most of my early childhood. My spirit is happiest when I am outside surrounded by nature and away from houses and roads. I love to be outside on waterways – rivers, canals, lakes coast – paddleboarding, or walking or cycling.
I have been walking and youth hostelling for many years, but map reading and route planning was always left to others. Only in recent years, I have gained in confidence using the OS maps app to plan routes and go on solo hiking adventures, and I love walking in the UK as the landscapes are so varied and stunning.

What’s your favourite route or place to go and why?
Shilpa Rasiah’s Favourite Walk – Lizard Point to Kynance Cove
My favourite walk is from the Lizard Point to Kynance Cove in the South West tip of Cornwall – it is breathtakingly beautiful, the colour of the water is turquoise, and the rocks and cove, a National Trust site, takes your breath away.

What’s your fave bit of kit available on the OS Shop?
I don’t own it just yet, but having started going on solo fell walks in the Lakes, where phone signal can be poor at times, I feel I can really do with a satellite devise that lets me stay in touch with a contact in case of emergencies and so I would choose the Garmin-gps device:
