St Catherine’s Point & Watershoot Bay – OS Wallpaper Download January 2026

Nestled at the southernmost tip of the Isle of Wight, St Catherine’s Point is a dramatic coastal landmark renowned for its sweeping views across the English Channel. Dominating the headland is St Catherine’s Lighthouse, an elegant octagonal tower built in 1838–1840 following the wreck of the Clarendon in 1836.

Just west of the point lies Watershoot Bay, one of the Isle of Wight’s most secluded and unspoiled bays. Accessible only by a challenging walk over rugged terrain, the bay rewards you with a wild, rocky shoreline. Its geology, dating back 90–110 million years, makes it a treasure trove for fossil hunters, while its raw beauty and crashing waves create an unforgettable backdrop.

Together, St Catherine’s Point and Watershoot Bay offer a haven for walkers, nature lovers, and birdwatchers.

As part of our aerial photography wallpaper series this year, this month’s OS Wallpaper image was selected by Philllip Nangle, one of our very own Air Camera Operators. Not only does it showcase the beauty of the southern coast of the Isle of Wight, but it also features Coastguard helicopter G-MCGV in action above the bay.

This imagery was captured by the OS Flying Unit, which plays a vital role in providing imagery to create many of Ordnance Survey’s products and datasets.
