OS Wallpaper Download: September 2023 – Eilean Donan Castle
One of the most recognisable castles in the Highlands of Scotland, Eilean Donan Castle has featured in numerous film and TV scenes.
First built somewhere in the mid 13th century, the current castle is relatively modern. The castle had been nearly totally destroying in 1719 due to fighting during the Jacobite uprising. It was only in 1919 that Lt. Col. John MacRae-Gilstrap started to rebuild it, working to retain the style it would have been in two centuries earlier.
This, and the beautiful scenery of Loch Duich made it especially appealing to to film-makers, starting as early as Bonnie Prince Charlie (1948). You may also recognise it from Highlander (1986), The World Is Not Enough (1999), Entrapment (1999), Rob Roy (1995), The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) and The New Avengers (1976–1977).
