Stourhead is a grand country house and gardens south of Bath. The artificial lake and carefully selected trees create dramatic colours as we move into autumn.
Built by the wealthy Hoare family, the house and gardens were donated to the National Trust in 1946 by the last member of the family, Sir Henry Hoare. It famously appeared in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice with Elizabeth Bennet (played by Keira Knightley) meeting the single, rich, and proud Mr. Darcy.
As well as the Palladian-style house, you will find a number of ornamental 'Temples' in the carefully managed grounds, reflecting the fashion for Greek and Roman architecture when they were built in the 1740s - 1760s.
