This dramatic monument is on the Isle of Lewis (Eilean Leòdhais) in the Outer Hebrides (Na h-Eileanan Siar) off the west coast of Scotland, and commemorates local crofters.
Sculptor Will Maclean and and stonemason Jim Crawford built this monument to the 'Aignish Raiders' in 1995. During the Highland Clearances, the wealth landowners forced crofters and their families from the land their ancestors had farmed for generations in favour of more profitable sheep and cattle farming. On the 9th of January 1888, a large band of men and women from the Point Peninsula seized control of Aignish farm, followed by marines being despatched and 14 of the raiders being arrested and given jail sentences of up to 18 months.
However, by 1905 public opinion shifted and the government handed back a number of crofts to locals, which are still in place to this day. The memorial lists the names of the original raiders, few of whom lived long enough to see the crofts restored. You can find more information on the Aignish Farm Raiders Monument here.
