This imposing castle is built on a “Riche Mount”, meaning “strong hill”, giving it’s name to the town that surrounds it. Originally built in 1071 by the Normans, it gets a mention in the Domesday Book of 1086. The 30m (100 ft) high main keep gives great views over the surrounding countryside.
The historic market town of Richmond became a centre for Yorkshire wool production, and the money this generated helped construct some great examples of Georgian buildings, many of which are still in use.
