OS Wallpaper Download: December 2023 – Kilchurn Castle, Argyll & Bute
Once the base of the powerful Campbell Clan, this impressive ruin sits on a rocky peninsula in Lock Awe, Argyll and Bute, Scotland.
Built in the 15th century, this fortress helped the Campbells dominate much of this region for over 100 years. It was originally on an island, likely accessed by boat or underwater causeway, making it incredibly difficult to attack. The lowering of water levels since means it now sits on a peninsula, and can be accessed on foot.
After the Campbells tried to support both sides of the Jacobite Uprising they lost control of the castle, and it was used as a garrison by government troops. Shortly after (historically speaking) in 1770 it was badly damaged by lightning and abandoned.
It’s generally open to visitors in summer, although there are currently ongoing conservation works. This photo was taken by Steve Partridge – find more of his work on Geograph.

Using the downloaded wallpaper image
To save the image on a computer, right-click (or alt-click) and select ‘save target as’ or the equivalent for your browser. If you are not sure of the screen size, use the largest one.
- For most computers, right click the desktop and select ‘set wallpaper’ to change the wallpaper image.
- For iOS devices, select the image, press and hold on the image to ‘save image’, then go to Photos > Share > Set as Wallpaper.
- On Android devices, select the image, long press to ‘download image’ and then go to Wallpapers > My photos and select the image.
Did you know?: On Windows PCs you can save multiple wallpaper images to a single folder, and have your desktop background automatically change regularly by selecting that folder as the source
