The very best of the Langdale Pikes
James Forrest explores the very best of the Langdale Pikes in a long – but glorious – day of hiking.
Meet Champion duo Two Blondes Walking. Outdoor writers, Dartmoor fans, navigation experts and avid wild campers.
What drives you to spend time outside?
Being outside reminds us of the important things in life. We love breathing fresh air and escaping the hustle and bustle.
Where are your favourite places to go?
Dartmoor, Devon’s beaches, the Isles of Scilly and the Cairngorms in Scotland.
What is your favourite thing to do outdoors?
Lucy (B1) loves teaching others, especially her students, how to navigate on Dartmoor and elsewhere. Fi (B2) loves outdoor swimming in cold water, growing her own vegetables and walking.
Who inspires you and how?
We have worked with some amazing women outdoor leaders who inspired us to get our walking qualifications and help other people to enjoy being outdoors. We love hearing stories of ordinary women who have pushed themselves to Get Outside and achieve.
What are your focuses this year to help people get outside more often?
We want to teach navigation skills to as many people as possible (youngsters and adults). We run navigation and wild camping courses on Dartmoor and our blog (eight years old this year) will continue to be packed with advice, suggestions and laughter about the outdoor life. We will be working outdoors with young people via DofE and Ten Tors, and are particular proud of our ladies-only navigation workshops.
What are your 3 biggest life achievements?
Fi - My three children (now most excellent adults), Two Blondes Walking and my career turn-around to become a freelance outdoor writer and the dozens of youngsters I trained to complete Dartmoor’s tough Ten Tors Challenge. Lucy – Taking groups of students to the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco (including summiting Mount Toubkhal). Having a daughter that makes me proud every single day. Being part of Two Blondes Walking and the Get Outside campaign, which has helped many people to be confident and safe outdoors.
3 words you live by…
Honesty, hard work, kindness (oh and laughter, you have to have laughter).
Do you have any guilty pleasures?
Frazzles and cheese for breakfast whilst still in our sleeping bags. Oh and squashed malt loaf that has been at the bottom of our rucksacks for so long that the ‘Best Before’ date has worn off.More from Two Blondes Walking
