Meet Jo Moseley, Hiker, Swimmer, Paddleboarder and author of the best selling book Stand Up Paddleboarding in Great Britain

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you like to get outside?

Hello! MHello! My name is Jo Moseley and I’m a 59 year old single Mum of two grown up sons, living on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. I’m a paddleboarder, swimmer, hiker and beach cleaner. I’m also an author of two bestselling books about beautiful places to paddleboard, a speaker and podcast host.

I started paddleboarding aged 51 simply to heal my knee and help my menopausal insomnia and anxiety. In 2019 I became the first woman to paddleboard coast to coast, fundraising and picking up litter. In 2022 my first book Stand Up Paddleboarding in Great Britain was published followed by Stand Up Paddleboarding in the Lake District in 2024.

I’m thrilled to be an OS Champion. My hope is that by sharing my own joy moving in nature it might encourage other women, especially those of my generation, to know they belong outdoors too. I hope they might want to explore more and support their own health, happiness and self belief. From tiny daily walks to longer SUP adventures, I hope that together we can also pick up litter and look after the places that bring such joy.

You’re not too old and it’s not too late to have an adventure!

What’s your favourite route or place to go and why?

Grasmere Cumbria Map

My favourite county is Yorkshire as it’s my home! I love the walks between Staithes and Whitby along the Cleveland Way, overlooking the North Sea and passing through Runswick Bay.

Having spent much of last year researching in the Lake District I fell in love again with Cumbria after visiting many times as a child.

One of my favourite walks there is around Grasmere, up Loughrigg Terrace – especially when the bluebells are out! – and overlooking Rydal. Afterwards it’s lovely to go for a dip in the lake to cool off. Bring a picnic and enjoy the glimmers on the water as the afternoon sun sets.

What’s your fave bit of kit available on the OS Shop?

A little cheeky perhaps, but I’m very proud that Ordnance Survey stock both my books about beautiful places to paddleboard in England, Scotland and Wales and specifically the Lake District on the website.

I also love the RED 10 l dry bags which are so handy for paddleboarding and swimming and of course the maps of the Lake District which were invaluable for my research.
