Taking on 7Stanes in 7 Days

Former world champion mountain biker Tracy Moseley, her husband James and their seven‑year‑old son Toby recently set out on a memorable family journey, to explore Scotland’s forests together as a family. OS Maps is proud to be supporting 7Stanes in 7 Days, a short documentary film, as they visit all seven of Scotland’s 7stanes trail centres and stone statues in seven days.

A family adventure, mapped for everyone

Planned and navigated using OS Maps, their adventure wasn’t about speed, distance or completing a challenge. It was about spending time together outdoors, discovering Scotland’s forests, and reminding families how simple it can be to create meaningful adventures close to home. So join OS Maps and Tracy for the real ups and downs of family adventure, tired legs, changing weather, big emotions and the joy of discovering new places together.

What are the 7Stanes?

The 7stanes are seven world‑class mountain‑biking trail centres across southern Scotland. Each centre features purpose‑built trails for all abilities and a unique “stane” (stone) sculpture created to reflect a local myth or legend, giving each location its own identity and story

An adventure built around family time

The 7stanes hold a special place in Tracy’s story. As a young rider, these were the trails that helped nurture her love of Scottish landscapes and a sense of adventure that would go on to shape her career.

When Tracy first imagined returning to the 7stanes with her family, the idea was never about “ticking off” places she used to ride her bike. This time, she returned not as a professional athlete, but as a parent and was keen to share that same feeling of discovery with her son, and to show other families that you don’t need experience or specialist kit to enjoy the outdoors together.

“When Toby started school and people found out I was a mountain biker they thought I was crazy. It made me realise that the image of mountain biking had got very extreme in recent years and I think really off putting for anyone starting out on their cycling journey.  I really wanted to change that perception and show how accessible, fun and affordable a day out on bikes in the forest can be for a family.”

Instead, the journey was designed to show how the forests, paths and landscapes of the South of Scotland offer countless opportunities to explore together. Together on bikes, on foot, or simply wandering and enjoying being outside.

Using OS Maps, Tracy and family planned their days so they could:

  • Take things at a pace that matched the family mood each day
  • Choose routes that felt manageable and fun
  • Find places to stop, explore and rest
  • Mix activity with downtime and discovery

It’s the kind of planning that helps adventures feel exciting, not overwhelming. For Tracy it’s unlocked so much for her and her family. ” Being outside together allows space for a family to discover new places, learn about nature and world that surrounds us and most importantly allows some downtime from the fast pace of life, school and pressures that modern technology puts on us 24/7.  Without any TV and using phones only for capturing pictures, navigation and planning the next adventure it gave so much time for simple play and conversation…time to be treasured where memories are made for ever.”
