Pen y Crug – An Ancient Hillfort with Stunning Views

The walk begins with a steady climb to Pen y Crug, a well-preserved Iron Age hillfort standing at363m above sea level. Thought to date back over 2,000 years, Pen y Crug would have been a thriving defensive settlement, offering commanding views of the Usk Valley and beyond.

The fort’s multiple concentric ramparts are still clearly visible today, giving an insight into its formidable past. Imagine the Celtic tribes who once lived here, using the high vantage point to spot potential threats and protect their community. From the summit, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views across Brecon, the Central Beacons, and the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you will get incredible views of Pen y Fan.

Maen-du Well – A Historic Spring with Folklore Connections

Descending from Pen y Crug, the route leads towards the Maen-du Well, a historic natural spring nestled in a peaceful spot. Once an important water source, the well was historically believed to have healing properties and may have been a place of spiritual significance for local people. Over the centuries, Maen-du Well has been a place of pilgrimage and superstition, with many visiting to seek its reputed curative powers.
