Paddleboarding on Yorkshire’s River Ure
The River Ure from Boroughbridge to Linton Lock is the perfect place for a paddleboarding adventure on a warm spring and summer day. The River Ure flows through Yorkshire and is known for its impressive waterfalls further upstream and has even featured in movies such as Prince of Thieves and Wuthering Heights. However, this section is incredibly flat, calm and brimming with wildlife as it meanders away from civilisation into open countryside and farm fields.

This 10 mile section starts at Boroughbridge Marina where there is a launch sight and parking for a small fee before flowing downstream to Linton Lock, where a friendly pub awaits your efforts at the end. If launching from the marina, you’ll need to portage across the lock at Milby Cut so if you’re not confident with this you can launch from the car park just below the weir instead.

As this is a point to point route, you’ll also need to either leave a car at each end or arrange a taxi when you arrive at Linton Lock back up to Boroughbridge. However, even if you just wanted to paddle around the River Ure in Boroughbridge, it still makes for a wonderful SUP session.

This river is beginner friendly as it’s flat, wide and the route follows downstream so you really can relax and let the water take you. You’ll pass plenty of wildlife including kingfishers, brown trout, swans, herons, dragonflies and if you’re really lucky, you might spot an otter and on either side of the river bank you’ll be sheltered by trees and plant life.

This river is prone to flooding during heavy rain so be sure to check the condition of it before you set off and remember, to paddle on most UK rivers and canals you need a license which you can get from Paddle UK or The Canal and River Trust.
