The Hebridean Way – the adventure of taking your bike across a chain of islands
Inspired by the heart-warming tale of love and resilience in “The Salt Path,” we invited our OS Champions to reveal special routes that are filled with meaning for them. In this post we hear from keen cyclist Megan Collington.
Why is the Hebridean Way route special to you?
After taking up bikepacking in 2022, this was the biggest and most remote bikepacking adventure I had ever been on. I completed the route with my best friend in 2023 and it was truly the trip of a lifetime.

Despite the weather being typically Scottish (think sidewards wind and rain every day!), we saw wildlife such as otters and eagles, and learned about Hebridean culture from the Callanish standing stones, Harris tweed weaving and the Gearrannan blackhouses.

Described as the Caribbean of Scotland due to its white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, the coastal views certainly lived up to expectations, but what we got out of the trip surpassed them.

“We learned what we’re capable of from pushing ourselves to our own limits and felt the indescribable joy of being on a self-sustained adventure”
