Chee Dale Stepping Stones Walk
This 3km loop along the stunning River Wye in the Peak District offers up an astonishing amount of natural beauty in such a short distance; from lush, green, rolling countryside to a 200ft beautiful, craggy limestone gorge, an abandoned quarry and historical lime kilns as well as a fabulous set of stepping-stones.
If you enjoy wild swimming, then this is definitely a walk I would remember to pack my swimming costume for as the River Wye is a great place for a quick dip along the route.
The route starts at Miller’s Dale Car Park before heading along the Monsal Trail, past a disused quarry and its lime kilns before then leaving the main path, down some steps and heading along the riverbank. The route is signposted for “Chee Dale” making this a great beginner route.
The next couple of miles take you alongside the River Wye as it makes its way along the valley. The next couple of miles take you alongside the River Wye as it makes its way along the valley. The surrounding nature, wildlife, flowers, wild garlic and trees are worth stopping to enjoy as the scenery then changes quickly. There are also some great swimming spots around here!
As you head deeper into Chee Dale Nature Reserve the limestone gorge starts to tower over you with rocks and the cliff face hanging overhead before you reach the stepping stones.
Some of the paths here can get slippery in wet weather and the stepping stones have been known to be completely submerged when the river is high making this route impassable. After the stepping-stones, the path continues up river for a short distance until you cross under a viaduct and see a path cutting left up the hillside.
If you follow this path, it will lead you onto the viaduct above and the entrance to the Chee Dale Tunnel. Following this tunnel will lead you back to the car park at Miller’s Dale where you started.
