On the edge of the Suffolk / Essex border this route takes in some truly stunning scenery as it passes through areas of the Stour Valley and Dedham Vale (AONB). Undulating in places, you’re treated to a variety of trails underfoot, from field tracks to woodland and nature reserves – all providing picturesque views, no matter the time of year.

Starting from the village of Bures this route follows parts of the St Edmunds Way, climbing away from the village, before descending into the valley where it crosses the River Stour and picks up the Stour Valley Path. There’s plenty to see en-route, as it weaves through the pretty villages of Wissington and Wormingford before returning past the historic Bures Mills.

Local legend is that in the middle ages servants of knight Sir Richard Waldegrave tried but failed to kill a dragon with arrows. Be sure to keep an eye out for this famous Bures Dragon on the landscape, hopefully with no fire breathing in sight!
