A North Downs Wander
Box Hill, part of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offers a number of walking routes along the North Downs Way, just outside London. It’s a perfect place to spend time in nature, with trails from little ones to more seasoned hikers and cyclists too (some of the cycling route once formed part of the British Olympics).

This short walk starts from the National Trust car park. Head towards Salomon’s Memorial, the iconic viewpoint near the summit. Here, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views over the Mole Valley, stretching as far as the South Downs on a clear day.

The trail then winds 275 steps downhill through woodland. At the bottom, you’ll reach the famous stepping stones across the River Mole, a picturesque highlight and a great stop for photos (unfortunately it was flooded when I visited so I crossed over the bridge).

To complete the walk, follow the trail back up to the summit, where you can unwind with refreshments at the National Trust café or enjoy a peaceful picnic overlooking the valley.
