Alport Castles – there are no turrets or draw bridges, this is a landslide created castle!
A walk to the impressive Alport Castles with its towers of rocks almost precariously standing tall in the valley. Walk across the pavement on the tops with sheep for company and head back along by the reservoir, a popular place with loads of different walks to choose from and great views, including the impressive and immense …. dam.

From the Fairholmes car park head back South along the road and then along the path by the lake before heading up through the trees and onto the hill top towards Alport Castle. It’s a well worn path where the sheep roam and it takes you into rock pavement at points.

Alport Castles is down to your left and you get good views from above at the rocky magnificence. The name “castles” comes from the debris from a landslide, which has produced several gritstone mounds that tower over the valley and appear from the distance to look like castles.

Head down from the top towards Alport Castle the reservoir and follow the road back to Fairholmes, there’s plenty of great views of the reservoir and surrounding hills and of course the dam which is incredibly impressive when the water is cascading down it’s immense stone wall.
