OS Wallpaper Download: September 2022

Ridgeway routes were common in ancient times. It's thought the clear sightlines provided protection from bandits, and they also tended to be easier to travel, lifting the route out of surrounding low lying areas that were prone to flooding. The importance of the trail can be seen in the remains of iron-age forts you will find along it's length, as well as cultural artefacts like the Uffington White Horse and the stone circle at Avebury.

Today the trail is one of Britains' National Trails. This photo was taken by Graham Smeddle on a walk in August 2022.
