North-west of Inverness, Loch Kinellan is a small loch with an ancient artificial island, or crannog. This picture by Craig Wallace was taken in 2014.
The crannog was excavated in 1914 to 1916. It was built on a base of logs (and a broken dugout canoe), then filled in with rocks, earth and clay to create a base for a secure home. The archaeologists dug pits and trenches into the base and found animal and fish bones, plus objects of iron, wood, stone and leather. There was also a carved ivory gaming-piece.
Later materials, such as pottery from the fourteenth and fifteenth century, and a piece of seventeenth or eighteenth century delftware show that it had been in human use until relatively recently. This crannog was for a long time a hunting-seat of the Earls of Ross, (and might have hosted Robert the Bruce at one time). By the nineteenth century the island was in use as a kitchen garden.
