OS Wallpaper Download: October 2021 - Nine Standards Rigg by Peter Watson
Just on the borders between Cumbria and North Yorkshire, Nine Standards Rigg is the summit of Hartley Fell. It's named for the nine impressive cairns. It's a great viewpoint over the surrounding area, and is a key marker on the Coast to Coast walk.
No-one is entirely sure when or why the Nine Standards were created. They may have been a boundary marker for historical counties, or they may be a more modern addition to mark the peak and viewpoint. The Coast to Coast route that passes them is an unofficial one was originally described by Alfred Wainwright in his 1973 book A Coast to Coast Walk, although there have been some changes and updates since. It goes from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay. in North Yorkshire.
