OS Wallpaper Download: February 2022 - Snowdrops at Dunrobin Castle, Sutherland by Andrew Tryon
One of the first signs of spring, Snowdrops can flower even in harsh weather conditions. This picture from the north of Scotland was taken in February 2018.
Depending on where you are in Britain, you may see snowdrops in January and occasionally as early as December, but further north they tend to be a little later. They are not native to the UK, but seem to have been introduced some time in the 16th century, and are now common in parks, gardens, woods and hedgerows across the country. They are a woodland flower and like damp conditions, but don't do so well where the soil dries out in summer, which can kill the bulbs.
If you have some coming up in your lawn, wait until the green leaves have faded back to yellow before mowing to ensure they have stored enough energy to grow again next year
This photograph was taken Andrew Tryon at Dunrobin Castle, Sutherland, and submitted to Geograph. One of Andrew's earlier pictures of Dunrobin Castle was a winner in the Ordnance Survey map cover competition a few years ago and now features on the cover of OS Landranger 17. You can see more of his excellent photography of the area on his Geograph Profile.
