OS Wallpaper Download: April 2022 - Cherry Blossom, Oakwood, London by Christine Matthews
It's April, and parks, gardens, countryside and woods are springing to life. This photo of a cherry tree in full blossom was taken by Christine Matthews in April 2021
Cherry blossom holds a special place in Japanese culture, and can be seen in art, furniture, clothing and even in religious practices. The blooms cover the trees in sweet-smelling blossom, but only last a couple of weeks before fading and falling. The short and sweet lives of the flowers symbolize both birth and death - as well as both beauty and violence. In spring there are cherry blossom forecasts to tell you where and when the best places to go are, and there are organised festivals attended by millions.
Here in great Britain we're not quite so obsessed... but perhaps we should be! April is a great time to plan on spending more time outdoors, and heading out to a park or garden to see the blooms in that short window before they fade, it can be a great day out. As well as cherry trees, look out for magnolia with large, fleshy petals, crab apple with delicate pink flowers and red buds, and laburnum with long drooping strings of flowers that weigh down the branches.
This photograph was submitted to Geograph by Christine Matthews and and was taken in Oakwood, Enfield in North London.
